What public records can I search if I want to find someone?

I was told if I wanted to find someone, to got to the courthouse and look in the public records. My question is which records do I search since all I know is the name and that they live here in town with an unlisted phone number.What public records can I search if I want to find someone?
In this case, the are most likely correct in that you would have to go to the courthouse (or other archive source) and manually look. But realize, with just a name, unless it is exceptionally unusual, it would be the same as looking in a phone book for someone who you just knew their name but don't know their phone number. There are a heck of a lot of "John Smith's" in my area's phonebook.



Also know that public records doesn't always mean easily accessible records. Because of privacy concerns, many places make it difficult at times to get to "public" records. Sometimes you may even have to fill out a Freedom of Information Act Request (if it is your information that someone is looking for, you might be appreciative that requirement).



But places you can look - voter registration roles, deed filings (hoping they own their residence), some areas (smaller towns for the most part) have a list of residences with their current occupants - in some cases they are reverse searchable.



Privacy is a big concern these days, and that they have an unlisted number probably means that they want that privacy more than most (or just that they use a cell phone instead of a land based phone). But there are records you can access at the courthouse that MIGHT help. Easy? Most certainly not, but depending on how much you really want to find this person, the effort may be worth it. Then again, maybe not.
