I have a friend who we found out got married back in January but didn't tell anyone. When we asked about it, he said he got the marriage annulled shortly after the marriage. But the marriage license is still visible in public records for the county. Since an annulment is suppose to make the marriage seem like it never happened, shouldn't the license be removed from public record or is it there forever? By the way, we live in Vegas, how ironic! How come we can still pull up the marriage certificate in public records if it was annulled?
In most states, the original marriage record remains a public record. You can file to have it removed from public record databases, but you have to file to do so.
In NY for instance, only bigamy and incest annulments automatically have the original marriage removed from the public record because they were not legal in the first place under any circumstances. How come we can still pull up the marriage certificate in public records if it was annulled?
forever
