Can a business operate under one name and have an alias name they use in public legal records?

I know of a business that has been sued multiple times but there is no public record of it. Could it be that they operate publicly under one name and use a different name in legal cases? Can a business operate under one name and have an alias name they use in public legal records?
Many businesses have a legal name different from the name they do business under. It is called a DBA (doing business as).

As an example the business could have a legal name of ABC, Inc. but then register for a DBA of Way Back Records. The name of the store would be Way Back Records but the legal name of the business is ABC, Inc.
