It took a while but I found this site where you can type in the last name of the person and one other piece of info to get the current status of his flight medical exam and pilot certificate / ratings.

There's no practical way to determine if the airman's checkride was "legal". The issuance of an airman's certificate (aka pilot's license) assumes that the test was legitimate. Just ask to see it.



If you are flying on a commercial flight you'll have to take it on faith that the crew is properly qualified -- the cockpit crew aren't going to show you their certificates. Air carrier flight standards are generally much more strict than the government's minumum requirements.



To my knowledge there has never been a case of an airman's certificate being issued in the US based on a falsified or pencil whipped flight test. Ask to see there pilots licence and Medical. You can also check the FAA.gov website.
Not sure why you would ask this? If you're flying commercial, will the airline tell you - will they know for sure - who the pilot will be before that day? There may be a last-minute substitution.



For people you meet who say "I can fly a plane for you"... They must show the owner of the plane a valid pilot's license and medical. Falsifying these is illegal (and probably requires some hi-tech equipment). They should also have their pilot logbook which should look like they've done the type of flying they claim.



I don't think the "test" would be not legal. To obtain a pilot's license, the test is performed by a certified instructor. I doubt too many would throw away their career and risk a conviction to give a buddy a license. It would have to be a pretty big bribe! Then the results are forwarded to the FAA which issues the license document.



I would imagine you could call the local FAA office and find if a license number/name is valid. I'm sure they'd like to know if someone is trying to commit fraud with their documents.



I don't imagine too many people buying and flying a plane themselves, without proper authorizations. Someone sooner or later at the airport will want to see their license, or will report them, etc. - if they don't kill themselves first.
If a person has a pilot certificate (not a license) then yes, the test was legal. You do not need to verify this, and in fact, the FAA will NOT verify the status of a pilot if you call and ask. Which is a good thing.



Flight testing is done by either the FAA or an FAA designee (NOT an instructor, as one person said). Pilot checkrides and not easy and most certificates are not just given away.



There is no good reason that you need to have proof of this before you fly.
