What are the steps to finding free public records online?

I need to find public records about an estate, and am having trouble finding anything online that is free. I am told that all public records are free, but there are companies that charge you to find what you need. I just want to elimate the middle man (and save some $$).What are the steps to finding free public records online?
The only way to eliminate the middle man is to go to the court where they were filed. Talk with the court clerk and they will direct you to the proper department. And be ready to spend some money...normally you will have to pay per sheet, for anything that you ask for. Depending on what exactly you are looking for, it could run you from .10 per sheet up to over $500 per report.... And beware the on-line companies....They say...we will get you all the public records for.....and what you get for you money is...this court has these records, this departments has those records...you still end up going to the court to get them.....
yea... you are going to have to pay for it honey....unless you can meet a really cute clerk of the courtWhat are the steps to finding free public records online?
Go to your county government's website and see if the respective court shares this information online. It's amazing what they are putting online today from real estate to birth records.

Second choice is to actually go to the respective court and find the physical documentation yourself.

Thus properly eliminating any middle man! What are the steps to finding free public records online?
As a genealogist I can tell you that no public records are free, not even your own. Try to get a copy of your birth certificate and it will cost you.
